About Me

I'm CeCe, the voice and creative soul behind Soul Foodie. I'm so delighted that you've arrived at my site! Here, you can learn a bit more about me and the passion behind the brand.

I grew up in Southern California, a place where cuisines from every corner of the world sit side by side on the same block. One weekend I'd be eating street tacos from a gourmet food truck, the next I'd be sampling dim sum with a friend's family, or digging into a plate of loaded fries at a neighborhood gathering. That upbringing shaped my palate before I ever understood what a palate was. Flavor, for me, has always meant variety, curiosity, and connection.

For years, I cooked the way most people do: by instinct, by craving, without thinking too hard about what certain ingredients were doing to my body. That changed when an unexpected health issue forced me to slow down and pay attention. I started reading labels. I researched what goes into conventional meat, the hormones and additives most of us never think twice about, and I began connecting the dots between what I was eating and how I felt day to day. The more I learned, the more I realized my plate needed an overhaul.

That overhaul became a calling. I started experimenting in my kitchen, taking the comfort foods I loved and the global flavors I grew up around, and reworking them into plant-based versions that still delivered on taste and texture. A burger built from grilled portobello still hits like a burger. A curry made with coconut milk and vegetables still carries all the warmth of the original. I learned that the dishes I loved most could get a complete makeover without losing their soul.

A Quick Bio

Flavor leads everything I create. A dish earns a place on my site only when it tastes incredible first, nourishes the body second, and honors where it came from third, all three happening at once whenever possible. I believe deeply that culinary traditions, especially the ones passed down through BIPOC communities, deserve both respect and reinvention. Eating well should never mean sacrificing the dishes that make you feel connected to your roots. My goal is to prove that healthy food and flavorful food belong in the same sentence, every time.

My Food Philosophy

I believe deeply that culinary traditions, especially the ones passed down through BIPOC communities, carry stories worth protecting. Recipes traveled with our ancestors, adapted to new lands, survived scarcity, and still found ways to taste like celebration. I see my work as a continuation of that story, not a departure from it. When I rebuild a classic dish using plants instead of meat or dairy, I'm not erasing where it came from. I'm proving that tradition can stretch to hold new ingredients without losing its meaning.

I also believe health shouldn't feel like punishment. So many people equate "eating clean" with bland, boring, or joyless food, and I spent years unlearning that myself. My kitchen runs on bold spice blends, rich sauces, and layered textures, because I refuse to believe wellness and pleasure sit on opposite ends of the table. Every recipe I post is my answer to anyone who's ever been told they have to choose between the two.

My Foodie Journey

My path into food didn't run through culinary school, and I've made peace with that. I built my foundation in marketing and branding, learning how to tell a story, build a visual identity, and connect with an audience long before I ever thought about doing it through food. Years in restaurant operations and event planning taught me something no classroom could: how people actually experience a meal, from the aroma that first hits them, to the way a plate gets plated, to the small service details that make someone feel cared for.

Those years behind the scenes in hospitality gave me a front-row seat to what makes food memorable. I watched chefs balance flavor and timing under pressure. I coordinated events where the menu had to tell a story in three courses or less. I learned how branding shapes the way people perceive a dish before they even taste it, and I carried all of that knowledge into my own kitchen once I started developing recipes seriously.

Everything else, the techniques, the flavor pairings, the confidence to take a dish apart and rebuild it from scratch, I built through trial, error, and a genuine obsession with getting it right. I've ruined more dishes than I can count. I've also had the kind of kitchen wins that make you want to call everyone you know. That hands-on, relentless experimentation is still how I create every recipe I share today.

Outside the Kitchen

Most of the time, I feel like my weekend (and week) doesn't really start until I'm at a farmer's market. I love the whole experience of it, the early morning energy, the smell of citrus and fresh herbs drifting between stalls, the vendor who always saves me the good strawberries and pluots before anyone else gets to them. It's never just about the produce either. I've met beekeepers, spice blenders, small-batch hot sauce makers, bakers, and flower growers who've all become familiar faces over the years. Half the conversations I have on a Saturday morning spark an idea for a new recipe, and the other half just remind me why I fell in love with food in the first place. There's something about standing in that space, surrounded by people who grow and make things with their hands, that keeps me inspired in a way nothing else quite does.

Travel is something else that feeds my soul and my love of food more than almost anything else. I've learned more about food standing in a market in another country than I ever could from a cookbook. Watching how people in different cultures use spice, texture, and technique changes how I think about my own kitchen every single time I come home.

I'm also a huge fan of photography, especially when it comes to capturing food. There's a real art to catching a dish in the exact moment it looks the way it tasted, the steam still rising off a bowl of curry, the light hitting a plate just right before anyone picks up a fork. I spend a lot of time thinking about color, texture, and composition, the same instincts I bring into the kitchen, just translated through a lens instead of a recipe.

I want you to feel confident the moment you step into your kitchen, even if you've never cooked a plant-based meal in your life. Confidence doesn't come from perfection. It comes from trying, adjusting, and trusting yourself a little more each time you cook. That's what I hope every recipe on this site gives you.

I want you to feel better in your body because of the choices you make at the table, not because you followed a trend, but because you understood what you were eating and why it mattered. Small shifts compound. I've lived that truth, and I want you to experience it too.

I want you to feel proud of the culinary traditions you carry, whatever they are. Those traditions deserve elevation, not replacement. You don't have to walk away from the food that raised you to take care of your health. You can honor where you come from and protect your body at the same time. I'm living proof of that, and this site exists to help you prove it to yourself.
